Elounda
Elounda is situated around 2 miles from Plaka and Kirki Apartments. It can be reached in minutes by either bus, taxi or hired car. Alternatively, you could try walking along the seashore and enjoy the fresh air and scenic landscape.
Elounda offers a full range of shops, restaurants, bars, cafes as well as banks and a post office. Also, here are local travel agents offering day trips to other parts of the island or other Greek islands if preferred. The busy square at the centre of Elounda is the main nightlife spot. Here you can find the traditional 'kafenion' where the locals gather for a drink of raki together with some delicious meze. Other bars and restaurants offer the best of the local cuisine as well as more international dishes.
Elounda is the location of the BBC series of the early 80s 'Who pays the Ferryman' and the original taverna, where a lot of the filming took place, still serves a mouth watering selection of local dishes.
Like the rest of the island Elounda has a long history and parts of it can be seen in the ancient sunken city of Olous. Elounda also boasts some of the most expensive hotels in the whole of Greece where famous guests from around the globe have been seen enjoying themselves.
A further 4 miles away is the bigger tourist resort of Agios Nicolaos, where a busier night life as well as a more sophisticated shopping experience can be enjoyed.
